Amazon Announces New Round of Layoffs Amid Operational Restructuring
Amazon.com Inc. is preparing for another significant workforce reduction, targeting approximately 30,000 positions across its retail operations, AWS cloud division, Prime Video, and human resources units. The cuts follow October 2025's elimination of 14,000 corporate roles—half the company's total planned reductions—with implementation expected as early as January 27.
CEO Andy Jassy frames the restructuring as an efficiency measure rather than a financial necessity or AI pivot. "We've accumulated organizational layers that inhibit agility," Jassy stated during Q3 earnings, dismissing speculation about demand weakness or artificial intelligence priorities driving the decision. The announcement comes alongside emerging pressures from potential US tariff increases, which Amazon reports are already triggering seller price adjustments on its e-commerce platform.
